Got this article from a website over here. What do you reckon, any truth??

Canterbury could be forced to include former Leeds player Bradley Clyde in their team for Friday's Carnegie World Club Challenge against the Rhinos.

The Bulldogs could be without forward Trevor Thurling (hamstring) and winger Trent Cutler (calf) after both players suffered injuries in training.

Clyde, 35, has not played since leaving Leeds in 2001 but insists he is ready to come to Canterbury's aid.

"If we are forced into it, I will play him," Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes said.

"It is too late to bring anybody else in."

Clyde, a forward, told BBC Sport:"If I was 17th man standing, then I'd play."

Folkes rates Thurling's chances of playing as 50/50 while Cutler will continue to have treatment in a bid to take part.

That'd be awesome to see Cylde play!!!! He hasn't played for 4 years though!!! I don't know if he has been keeping fit since retirement but thats a loooooong time for even a champion like Clyde to be out of the game.

I seriously doubt that the bulldogs are going to put their team manager on to the field. How devastating that Thurling is injured, apparently he pulled his hammy at their first training session in Leeds. Let's hope he recovers so he can prove he is the best up and coming prop at the club. What is this about Cutler? I didn't know he was injured.

Does anyone else think this might be some strange tactic to lure the Rhinos into a false sense of security?
I still don't know why we only took 18.....we should have been more prepared for something like this and taken 20.

Should be....interesting if he takes to the field to say the least!...But I agree with the thought - If we are down to 16 fit players - what choice do we have?

And I agree with some1 above - bring back Folkesey instead!!!....Sharp as a tack up top & till fit as a fiddle!...Now THAt i'd REALLY like to see!! :D

What a tragedy if Cutler doesn't play though....I have been looking MIGHTILY forward to seeing this top-pedigree pup strut his stuff in the top grade for well over a YEAR now! :(

Here's an update:

Legends back Clyde return
By Dean Ritchie and Mark Jeffries
February 3, 2005

FORMER Canberra greats last night gave unconditional support for the remarkable return to rugby league this weekend of ex-Raiders and Bulldogs legend Bradley Clyde.

Clyde, the Bulldogs football manager, has been named the surprise 18th man for Saturday morning's World Club Challenge against Leeds to cover injury concerns over rookie winger Trent Cutler and prop Trevor Thurling.

Should Cutler or Thurling withdraw in the next 48 hours, Clyde, the 35-year-old fitness fanatic, will play his first match in four years.

Clyde trained with the Bulldogs yesterday in Leeds.

"It's too late to bring someone else over now," said coach Steve Folkes.

A former Test and NSW forward, Clyde has not played since an unhappy six-month stint with Leeds ended with a defeat by Bradford at Odsal in July 2001.

Unanimously regarded as one of the modern-day greats, Clyde said: "I thought it was a gee-up when Steve [Folkes] said he intended to play me but when I realised they weren't joking, I am really looking forward to it.

"Physically, I am obviously not 100 per cent but I do take my [personal] training seriously to a point and I think I can still make a contribution given the opportunity.

"The plan was for me to come off the bench and play in the back row, and what a game to help out in."

Former Canberra champions Laurie Daley, Mal Meninga, Steve Walters and Glenn Lazarus – who together won three premierships for the club – backed Clyde's return.

"Go for it, big fella," Lazarus said. "He is one bloke who could do it. Fitness was his forte. He wouldn't let anyone down, particularly on the football field.

"There aren't too many as good a lock forward as Bradley in the modern era. He's right up there. He's kept himself fit and has a heart as big as Phar Lap. I just wish I had the chance to do it."

Daley said: "No doubt Bradley would make a successful comeback. He was one of the game's best and is a fitness freak. He would go as long as Steve Folkes wanted."

Meninga went as far as to suggest Clyde would be capable of playing 80 minutes.

"He played in a Legends of League game last year and he was everywhere," Meninga said. "He'd make a tackle on one side of the field and then in covering defence on the other side. He'd do it on his ear.

"In fact, he could probably play the whole game if need be."

Walters said: "He still keeps himself fit. He'd obviously be a bit rusty but he wouldn't let anyone down – he might even get a new contract."

Folkes said injuries had forced him into placing Clyde on standby.

"Bradley [Clyde] kept on asking whether we were having a go at him [about playing] but then he looked like he was very excited about the whole thing," Folkes said.

"He trained well with the team today and he's one of the fittest blokes around.

"Hopefully, we won't need him but it's going to be an interesting decision. We really haven't got too many options."

An ultrasound in Leeds yesterday allayed fears Cutler had suffered a blood clot during the flight to Heathrow last weekend while Thurling is not 100 per cent after straining a hamstring.

Vein of injury worries for Folkes
By Steve Mascord in Leeds
February 3, 2005

Rookie winger Trent Cutler has survived a deep vein thrombosis scare but the exact make-up of the Bulldogs side for Friday night's World Club Challenge decider against Leeds remains uncertain.

Jokes about the possibility of team manager Brad Clyde playing off the bench to make up the numbers suddenly became more serious when Cutler joined prop Trevor Thurling (hamstring) on the sidelines at training on Tuesday.

Cutler, the son of club stalwart Stan and who is due to make his first-grade debut in the game at Elland Road, had complained of soreness in his left leg after the long journey to Leeds, and team doctor Hugh Hazard discovered inflammation to a vein.

"It could be a serious thing, what [Cutler] has got," said coach Steve Folkes. "We're not going to take any risks with that." The Bulldogs' journey from Belmore took 36 hours and players were issued with therapeutic "skins" and warned about the dangers of DVT.

Cutler was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for an ultrasound, with Hazard saying: "It is only superficial and he will be all right to play." Cutler described the problem as "nothing" and said he was always confident of being fit. "It's just precautionary," he said of his absence from training.

AdvertisementBut Folkes won't be able to finalise his final 17 until match eve, with Thurling rated only a 50-50 chance of playing. "It's tough to risk a kid like that so early in the season," Hazard said.

Clyde still trains two hours a day and recently finished first in a club triathlon. "I'm out . . . I don't want to talk about it," he joked when Cutler got the all-clear.

Leeds had yet to name their side but few shocks were expected, with five-eighth Danny McGuire expected to overcome a groin injury and Andrew Dunemann poised to fill in at hooker for the injured Matt Diskin.

Meanwhile, chief executive Malcolm Noad said he was confident the Bulldogs players would be professional enough not to let speculation over their futures distract them during the first half of the season. Stars such as Sonny Bill Williams, Willie Mason and Braith Anasta are all off contract and certain to attract interest from rival clubs.

"We're going to play it through the managers," Noad said. "I don't think it's going to be a huge distraction for the guys, although it's going to be a huge challenge to keep them all there."

Williams, in particular, would be deluged with offers should he still be unsigned at the end of the tampering ban on June 30. Some observers have suggested he could attract offers of up to $500,000 a year.

"We're just going to continue to talk to his management team as often and for as long as we can so it doesn't go through to June 30," Noad said. "They've indicated very strongly they want him to stay at the club and he's indicated he's very happy at the club.

"I think, where there's a will there's a way."

Williams is also the subject of a salary-cap investigation into a third-party endorsement with Gatorade. NRL salary cap commissioner Ian Schubert has requested a copy of his contract with the company.

Folkes reminded his players of the poor record of Australian clubs in the WCC at a team meeting on Tuesday. "I think it's 7-4 against Australian teams, we're pretty aware of that," Noad said.

Folkes ran into referee Sean Hampstead following training and checked on rule variations for the match - those from last season and British practices.

NRL referees will call "surrender" this season instead of "lost his legs" when there is a dominant tackle, while in Super League defending players can be penalised for tackling a player in the air in the in-goal. But it is unlikely anyone would allow an attacker to score a try under his nose, so the rule is largely ignored.

Ticket sales have reached 35,000. The capacity is uncertain because some seats may be made unavailable after spectators at the Tri-Nations final complained of obstructed views.

Both teams will receive about $60,000, with the winner earning another $60,000. The Dogs gave half their prizemoney from last year's grand final success to the players, but it is uncertain if they will do the same this time.

Someone raised this issue on another forum, have not seen an answer for it though...

Even if he was paid a $1 contract, would any money he earned as being the Football Manager for the Dogs needed to be included under the salary cap?

Ie: If a club employs a footballer to work as security at a leagues club, this is included under the cap isn't it? As a secondary payment from the club?

Uh - I think that person needs to sit back & think hard for a second...because I seriously doubt the NRL salary cap applies to The WCC...But if he played in the NRL...his Football Manager's wage most probably should count against our cap. But he's not going to play in the NRL - so who gives a flamingo!??
