nrl to sacrifice cash for fans.

    By Ed Jackson
THE NRL says it's willing to take a pay hit on its new television rights agreement if it means it can have a fixed calendar of matches.

The NRL's current deal, valued at $500 million over six years, ends following the 2012 campaign.

But under the terms of that deal, the NRL has a rolling schedule which allows broadcasters - the Nine Network and Fox Sports - to pick and choose which matches they want to televise depending on a team's form and appeal.

So if it guaranteed the year's fixtures were locked in before the season started, NRL chief executive David Gallop says the game would accept less money for its next deal.

Gallop says the system should be changed to allow fans and clubs to know exactly where and when they are playing - even though he said it could cost the code up to $50 million on the negotiating table.

"A fixed schedule for us, the advantages for our fans and clubs will hopefully outweigh that equation," he said.

"The whole issue of how we allocate games on that rolling schedule ... is a very complicated exercise.

"We will definitely be going to them and say that's what we want and if they were to come back hypothetically and say 'okay, that's $50 million less' then we've got a commercial decision to make.

"I doubt they'll do that. I do think they'll come back and offer us less but I don't think it'll be enough to make us change our mind.

"I think that certainty has become a real imperative for the game."

Gallop, speaking at the NRL's second annual club members forum, also expressed his frustration with the sport's broadcasters, saying they had been guilty of breaking their contractual obligations at times, particularly with televising matches in Melbourne.

"We do agitate about it, on a week-to-week basis because, to be frank, from time-to-time they don't even comply with their contractual obligations," he said.

"You can't fine them, but I'd like to. I think we all share that frustration."

NRL marketing and commercial director Paul Kind said the new TV deal could also include a Sunday afternoon "twilight" fixture as that concept gained popularity with fans and broadcasters.

"When this deal was negotiated Friday night was the big night ... two Friday night matches looked like it was going to be a great outcome for us from an attendance point of view," Kind said.

"And now that Sunday afternoon idea seems to have warmed right up in the past 12 months."

What a useless **** David Gallop is. He has basically just robbed the game of at least 50 Mil by coming out with these stupid comments. Instead of showing how great the game is and shopping the rights around for the best price, he has just laid down and told channel 9 to offer them less next time round. Massive softcock.

The idea is right. But a good CEO would be able to lock in the calendar AND get more money, not less.

Ch9 is going downhill quickly, without league they ae nothing. We should make them pay through their ass for the next deal.

I have also heard rumours that ch7 have a few billion sitting in the bank, and may be used to bid for the NRL when the rights next go for auction.

Ohhh man, if we get less money from our next tv deal then the NRL board/Gallop are absolutely useless, we are the most watched sport on pay tv, we dominant tv in NSW/QLD and our SOO series is watched by millions, we were robbed short in our last deal, we gotta push for more not less, seriously, if this is true then its a disgrace.

You'll probably notice that a lot of the games big name players have signed contracts that end just as the next TV deal would kick in.

This is with the idea that there will be more money, therefor a higher salary cap.

If we dont get a major upgrade in contract that allows our world class elite athletes to be paid their market value, they wont wait around.

I dont know whether or not the BOD told him to go make these comments but it doesnt matter. If you have half a brain you say no if they tell you to say this.

Negotiation 101: do not say you will accept lower offer... I cant believe that he has come out and said that, its an absolute travesty, who comes and out sells themself short like that honestly?

In the end he has the title of CEO and just like he is accountable for the failures and successes of the league he is accountable for the decisions that are made.

    Making those comments is stupid.

It would be like me going to do a quote to install an irrigation system and saying: The price is $4000, but I don't think you'll pay that much so I'll do it for $2500. It's selling yourself short. You tell them what you want and see what happens. you don't just undersell yourself (or the game you are running), you try to get the highest price possible. If people don't want to pay that, then you can start to lower your price.

Haha. Ahhh Gallop. We can always rely on you for f**king the game over. At least he's consistent in that regard. Great business acumen shown here. Just fantastic. I always use the peanut butter on a playing card analogy (you love it McBain) but the NRL won't even get that this time around.

I have never had any doubt and said all along that this lacky would keep his job until the next TV rights deals were up, he'd rip the game off for his employers News Ltd and for Channel 9 and then he will leave and News Ltd will pull out of Rugby League already having secured lucrative rights for a pittance.

It's a disgrace that Rugby League is so incestuous and backward that no one will step in and prevent the game being ripped off and will instead all just sit idly by and watch the game get set back at least another 5 years if not more.

If you don't laugh you'll cry.
Thank you Greenberg for honouring the clubs origins, history and tradition by changing the name back to the Canterbury-Bankstown!
